I would like to share a personal experience with you all. Every year the Christmas tree goes up in my house on Black Friday. It's a tradition that's been going on since I can remember. I grew up with it as a child, my children grew up with it, and now my grandchildren. So, as tradition has it, I decorated our tree on Black Friday as usual.
My husband decided to put candy canes on the tree this year, which is out of the norm. I was sort of against the idea at first but he kept persisting so I gave in. Since my grandchildren are over all of the time, we decided to place the candy canes higher on the tree, out of their reach. When all was said and done, the tree looked AMAZING!
A few days went by and my grand daughters stopped over for a visit. Autumn will be three in March and Alyssa is only 1 1/2. They immediately ran right for the tree...nearly running me over at the door. I guess ornaments and white lights are more exciting than Grandma! They stood before the tree in pure awe.
My daughter and I stood in the living room and began talking. After a few minutes, I realized I hadn't heard the girls. Anyone who's ever had young kids knows that silence generally means they are getting into something they shouldn't be! I turn around to find the girls CLIMBING the tree with hopes of reaching one of those candy canes! Autumn is in the front of the tree and Alyssa in the back (Double trouble!!) Before I can even get the words "NO" out of my mouth, the whole tree comes crashing down! Alyssa just stands there screaming as the tree falls forward, away from her. Now...as I said, Autumn was climbing the front of the tree which means this 8 ft tree is now coming down in the same direction as she's at. She LUNGES to the couch just in the nick of time and avoids having the tree land on her. These two little girls got the fear kicked right out of them, let me tell you! It was picture perfect!!
I couldn't help but almost die of laughter. It was hilarious to see them. It was like something right out of a comedy movie! After my eyes cleared up from all of the water that filled them from all of the laughter, I realized that the tree landed on my coffe table, breaking almost every single ornament in the front of the tree. My laughter quickly faded!! I gather up all of the broken glass from the shattered ornaments and stand the tree back up. Mind you, this process took a good half hour to do.
My daughter and grand daughters have now left and I step back and take a look at my bare tree. I realize that it is off-centered and could definitely use a shift a pinch to the left. I lay flat on my back on the floor underneath of the tree and try to wiggle it over a bit to the left. Yup...You guessed it...The whole tree came crashing down for a second time! This time, I was under it!!
I manage to push the tree off of me and stand it back up, but not before stepping on a broken ornament and slicing the bottom of my foot! So, here I am, now hoping on one foot trying to keep the tree from falling over again. I couldn't get the tree to stand correctly so I had to just lean it up on an angle in the corner of the room.
I hop my way into the bathroom for a bandage for my foot and notice that a piece of the glass has actually broken off inside of my foot. I can't get the glass out so I spend the ENTIRE day unable to walk on one foot. My husband comes home from work later that evening. Of course, by this point, I'm putting full blame on him and his idea of adding candy canes to the tree! (haha)
HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL OF YOU!!!
~Angie
